This is a watercolor I did in my studio from a photo I took just outside the Metropolitian Museum of Art in NYC during a recent trip. The entire painting 15"*15" was painted upside down (not me ...the paper). I was just painting shapes not knowing what they were then when I turned it right side up Voila!  It is titled "One with the Works!" and recently (October 2011) won Best in Show with the Millburn/Short Hills Art Club in New Jersey.

Hey Damien..........I was wondering what you have been up to..now I know......winning everything you enter.....Excellent!!!!!

This plein air painting won an Award of Excellence at the American Impressionist Society annual juried show held at the Mountainsong Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea back in October. Judge was Scott Christensen. Wonderful venue, jury, judge and painters-many of whom are members of this site.

I find that facinating that you painted this upside down. Do you do this often? I paint shapes as well, ignoring the scene. Is this a technique to learn this skill? Was this something you were taught?

Okay, why it worked this time I don't know. Don, I was using the correct icon -- it just seemed to be stuck -- and I know it could have just been a problem on my own computer. But it worked this time. This was First Place at the Madison Plein Air Festival last spring. It is a pastel and I think it was 12" x 9" and title is "Boat House Roses".

I'll try this again, see if the image will show up and not just a link to it...this won an award in Silverton Arts Association Plein Air Show. It's "Indian Bluff on the Abiqua" (24x18) a historical site where a famous battle took place between the Willamette Valley (Oregon) cavalry and Klamath Indians.

I know this is terribly self-serving and all I can say in my defense is that I have not taken part in more than a handful of Art Competions through-out my life.

I found this painting today "Pescadero Beach", while looking for another piece. Isn't that always the way though? This won First Place for Watercolor in a Palo Alto Art Festival back in the mid 80's, I think. It was done on location on a full sheet of 'Arches 140lb cold press, out at Pescadero Beach on the California coast. I acutally traded it for Chiropractic work by a Dr. Costello, who had/has his practice on the main street in Palo Alto. I gave him a good price with the agreement that it be hung in his waiting room visible from the street window.

Really nice painting Don. Great composition, tones and textures.

Thanks for the kind comments Tom. It looks like you are getting alot of painting done. Love your subjects and the natural colors.

Really interesting approach and well done.

This watercolor titled "Irish Fishing Boats", painted on our first day in Ireland last summer, won 1st place for watercolors in the Artist Guild of Northwest Georgia's Fifth Annual Competition last night, 10/6/2012. Obviously, I am very pleased, but also as a plein air painting, I think it says something about the freshness forced on us by the moment and urgency of being there in person and without the aid of photos or the comfort of the studio, capture the image as quickly and accurately as possible. Sometimes they just flow and other times you can't do a thing. Also, this same painting in another show will be rejected by another judge... so there is that and I should step back and realize that last night was my lucky night.

Just sayin'Earlier this year, in the Spring, I was awarded Honorable Mention for this watercolor from the Marietta/Cobb Art Museum's Plein Air Event. I sat on the tailgate of my truck and did three watercolors of this drive thru at the Krystal's.  I found out later it was closing down and that was it's last day of operation. We had never eaten there before but did that final day. I did not post this before because it was only Honorable Mention... but at least I was not shut out. Two of our members, Shane MacDonald won First Place for oils and Ed Cahill won 2nd Place for oils... so I was the low man on the pole that day.

My painting "Sunlight on Snow, Afternoon" 9 x 12 plein air oil, just won the "Best of Signature Members Award" at the 2012 Plein Air Painters of New Mexico Annual Show in Albuquerque, NM.  October 5, 2012.  A nice $500 check came with the award.  Happy dance!  I painted this in my back yard last winter after a fresh snow.

Of course I can't compare this to any of the others, but this is a real beauty. The composition and triadic color scheme of orange/green/purple are actually my favorite. Very nice.
