PLEIN AIR ARTISTS

An Online Artist's Coop for Artists who Paint on Location

I wonder if anyone could advise me regarding creating my own web site. I don't need anything terribly sophisticated to start. Does anyone have experience with the Intuit web site where you can use a template to make your own page? Other suggestions? Thanks!

Try Homestead.com

So easy to figure out and they have a great support staff.
I use Fine Art Studio On Line to host my web site. They are extremely user friendly and have great customer service. You are welcome to take a look at my site -- www.addrendoss.com, and the site for Fine Art Studio is www.fineartstudioonline.com.
My first site was with Yahoo and I found it very simple to get something going - that being said, I have now switched to fineartstudioonline.com -

My original idea of leaving yahoo for something more sophisticated and sleeker was to reduce my price but I found out that I just didn't have the knowledge base to create what I wanted. You can do it with yahoo and I bet you will be very happy but if you want something a little more upscale try the other - you can check out my current web site at barbarabenedictart.com.

The other hosting service I am switching to for my plein air society is just host. They are cheap and because I waffled on signing with them they reduced it to $2.50 a month! I have yet to build the site but it is far less sophisticated than what I wanted for my art.

I hope this has helped you a little.

I've been very happy at www.artmajeur.com for many years with a free site and now with a customized site that only costs about $120/year. You're welcome to check it out at www.janblencowe.com
I did mine by using iWeb that came with the operating system of my iMac. Very easy. I bet that is no help though, huh? Like I have been telling my sister and brother, dump the PC and get a Mac!
I did mine with sitekreator when it was free and they were new, mine is still free but they now charge. They have been a lovely company to deal with and are very helpful with queries. That's my 'gallery' site. No prices on to upset my galleries.

I'm also in the process of setting up one with Google (free) and I love it. I'm keeping that one private as I plan to put prices on and use that as a sales site for people interested in my work. It's very easy to use and I like the uncluttered result. Being private it won't upset the bricks and mortar galleries :>) as they won't access it.

If anyone wants to see it just pm me and I'll email an invitation
Just want to say thanks to everyone that's responded. Lots of great information. It'll take some investigating......Thanks!
Sorry to disagree but the "www" has nothing to do with whether a site is a blog or website. The "www" is just an arbitrary part of a domain name without a specific function, it's a convention essentially. For example my blog url is www.ThePoeticLandscape.com

Also you can have a shopping cart installed on your blog as well as "buy it now" buttons.
Blogs can also link to other pages, support javascript, video, widgets.

Hi Diana,

First of all you have to differentiate between a blog and a website. All sites that are http:// and then the name, without www. in front of the name, are blogs and they are all free and easy to create. An actual website has many more features than what a blog can offer, like a shopping cart, for example, to sell your art and various menus, sections and categories.

I did my websites (3) with Joomla Open Source - their free templates (and there are thousands to choose from) are wonderful and easy to work with and have many, many features.

Go to Joomla 24 to view the templates, and once you've decided on a template, it's just a matter of registering your domain name and then finding someone to host it for you. Joomla also does hosting.

Here are 3 sites that I built :

iCreate-OnLine (still in progress)
Clarkson's Classic Cars
Oorvloed (it's in Afrikaans, but you'll get an idea of the lay-out and features)
I use http://www.bravenet.com as a host, they have a 'free' website sign up for that, try it out, then when you're ready to get rid of the ads (that come with the free site)... you can buy hosting from them. I've used them for years (over 10) for various dog clubs, jeep clubs, as well as business sites... they are reasonable in price and have a good record for customer service and easy of use, as well as UP time.

PS - most browsers now 'assume' the www on a URL so you can drop it or use it, doesn't matter either way.
PSS - YEAH MACs... love mine.
No, the free domain name for my blog through blogger is a sub-domain and it is www.ThePaintingADayProject.blogspot.com , again the www is irrelevant. The primary difference between blog and website is that a blog is updated in chronological order, usually with the most recent post first, and as you scroll down the older posts are shown in reverse chronological order from there. It can nhave other pages and link to a number of other things. think of a blog as a journal or diary and a webpage as a magazine you can page through.

Sorry Jan, you're right, Blogger and Wordpress, amongst others, offer the www. option when you pay for your blog, then it's no longer free. My point was that blogs are primarily free and that websites you have to pay for hosting (most of the time). You know how it goes, so many options...

Regards

a Ning site is more suitable for discussion groups - a friend set up a good one and we keep it private - they can be public as well

you can attach a blog, hosted elsewhere, to your website by simply making that page link take you there if you want

i did that with my blurb book - a link goes directly to the page on blurb, where people can look/buy.
