I have been having a wonderful winter doing pastels from the cab of my Ford Ranger. It is cramped, so they are small, but I have been recently interested in doing these night scenes in town and at the shopping malls with all the lights etc. If you plan it just so, you can even position yourself under one of the mercury vapor lamps and you won't need your flashlight to see.

Donald ,

As I just sent to you, I am joining Nightscapes and will produce some new smaller night watercolors. Its a challenge I,ve wanted to undertake for some time. The night on Polish Hill painting is one of my most successful watercolors and is larger than I generally work.

This was my first nightscape.  Each summer I paint with a friend/s at night because it is too hot in Orlando during the day!

I use a headlamp to illuminate my panel and a booklight taped to a dowel, attached to the back of my easel, shining down on the palette. This is a good way to paint when there isn't any artificial light like a streetlamp.

This is a tiny pastel sketch done of the lights across the creek in my backyard of my neighbor's yard. I chose a few colors inside before going out to draw... a few light, middle and dark tones, that went well together, knowing that choosing for color in the 1/2 darkness was not going to work.

This is one of my favorites, done by moonlight during the Mystic Plein Air event 2011, in June. Oils on wood panel with a small LED light on my cap visor. Although it has a choice of 1, 3 or 5 lights I like to keep it on its low setting so that my eyes are not dilating too much.

The first painting are logs in the fire ring and the other is my brother staying warm by the fire. These were painted using the light clamped on my Easyl.

I used a Petzl bicycle light for these. Still have trouble mixing with nocturnes...

Jerry I think your nights capes are wonderful, gonna buy a Petzl lite now
