Congrats Mike! You will love Easton... I did the event in 2009 and had a blast. The community really comes together to support the event and the crowds that pour into town for the weekend are wonderful (sales!). Great painting venues - landscapes, towns, water, marshes... have fun!! Bug spray & sun block a must! Can't wait to see your paintings from the event!

I would love to take part in a Plein Air event over in the States, it sounds like it would be fantastic fun !!! Any of you Watercolouristas who are visiting Europe should check out our event in late July, early August here in Ireland. The event is called Art in the Open and is part of www.pleineire.ning.com we ran an advertisement in PleinAir Magazine in the states last month perhaps you spotted it !!! We have had some artists from Plein Air groups in America attend our event both last year and the year before , David Diaz was our guest painter last year and Judy Koons. The previous year Catherine Elliot was one of our guests and gave a great workshop as did David and Judy last year. So if any of you are travelling in Europe around that time, why not check it out ?

Thanks Louise... yes, David said he loved your event --  painted with David in Paint Annapolis event and he spoke about his Ireland trip. Saw your ad as well in the Plein Air magazine. It sounds wonderful. Can't do it this year... but maybe in 2012.

Hello Watercolor Buddies:  I have been looking into "plein air pochade boxes" for us watercolorists. Well, I looked and looked at the commercial models available and finally decided it might be better to just make one myself. The criteria I wanted: I am left handed, and paint only in watercolor. I needed to be able to paint on 1/8 and 1/4th sheets of watercolor paper. I wanted to be able to store my brushes and palette in the box along with some paper if I need to. With this in mind and after looking at several blogs (josefsy.blogspot.com, jeremysams.blogspot.com)  I built the following pochade box and call it "Gator Box". I am lucky to have a best friend who is a cabinet maker and I have the privilege of having a key to the shop, use any scraps and all the tools.  This is my result.

Nice to see such a well thought out and put together piece of equipment. It'd be nice for others to share their set ups... especially home made ones. I use an Open Box M for my oils ( they also have a watercolor set up ). But for watercolors I made a simple easel that will accommodate my paper stretched on Gator board. I'll probably buy a tray for my tripod as the water bucket hanging off the legs is a bit awkward.

I sometimes use 4 or 5 ply bristol board if I know it will be windy or I want to travel light.  No backing board is needed.  You cannot do a flat wash on this surface but the smooth surface is great for ink and watercolor wash.

Thanks George Ann, that is something to try.  Our first daughter was born in Gainsville while I was teaching  at the college in Cleveland in 1962. Love those NE Georgia mountains.

I painted this yesterday. It is a favorite local "seafood shack" on the water front. The place to be during the "dog days of August".
