Here is a follow up to the pigment Quinacridone Gold sent to me from Daniel Smith.

The following is the story of DS Quinacridone Gold.


Quinacridone Gold comes in three main shades which were dictated by the automotive industry. One of the most complex of pigment families to create – using over 20 different chemical steps to produce – Quinacridones are costly to manufacture.

The automotive industry decided not to use the particular shade using PO49 and in late 1999 the manufacturer ceased all production. DANIEL SMITH was notified of this and offered to buy all remaining stock, which they did and now remain the only source of this particular pigment of Quinacridone Gold.

Suggestions please; I am looking for a hot pressed watercolor notebook. I used to use Arches, Travel Book, hot pressed, 140 lbs, 6x10 but they discotinued it. Any suggestions?

Gregg, The cheapest route to go is to make your own. I keep my older sketchbook covers, or punch holes on some heavy duty "davey" board ( book binders board ), put in five ring clasps and cut up full sheets into 4x 11" x 15" or 8x 11" x 7.5". There is the Magnani Portofino pad, which is hot pressed 140 lb. 20 sheets available at Dick Blick ( and others ). I believe the paper is softer than Arches though. Good luck.

If you want a bound sketchbook, you can also do what Mike suggested and take the pages and cover to Kinkos. They can spiral bind it. I don't remember what the cost is, it depends on the size and no. of pages.

Thanks Capt for the link. I'm after a hot pressed notebook and that's a cold pressed paper. I guess the difference is a smooth as opposed to rough texture.
