Hi Everyone,
I wanted to get folks opinions on which coated papers they prefer and why. I love Art Spectrum and Pastel Boards by Ampersand but there are so many different ones out there.
Any suggestions would be great.

Hi Lisa,
I like the same boards. Pastel Boards are a little coarse and will not hold as many layers as Art Spectrum. I have been working on UArt paper and it is really good for layering, just a tad better for me than Wallis. UArt comes in several different grits. I think I like the 500 the best so far.

Hi, just getting back to pastel... was doing WC and mixed media in the FL Keys.  I will be teaching a pastel course at our local (Watkins Glen, NY) art gallery this summer and want to be sure I am up to it.  Several indoor classes and then we go plein air.  Just sharing.

Yes, Coralee, there is indeed a good sharpener! I use a DAHLE 155 and it is great! I was introduced to it by Debbie Nadlehoffer while on St. George Island for a painting week. It has sqeezable little arms that you pinch and pull out to farther out on the pencil when you stick the pencil into the sharpener. They gently pull the pencil into the sharpener and you get a great point without breaking it. Saved me many times! The company probably has several models by now but check them out on Google. thanks so much, Mikki.  Exactly what I wanted to know...  I've been struggling with this for years, thinking there was no solution.  I'll check it out right away.

I think you will be well pleased. It's really a pain to lose chunks of both colored pencils, but especially the pastel pencils!

Would love to see pics of different artists plein air set ups for pastels... I'm struggling with limiting my numbers and finding ways to keep the pastels handy in plein air.  Thanks, Coralee
