Watercolor painted from a bridge in Emerson Illinois. Just was really drawn to the reflection in the open water.

I have tried alcohol. It speeds the evaporation, hence the freezing. Glycerin, will retard the evaporation.

An interesting effect to to use alcohol alone with the paint of a heavily laden detail brush over a wet wash. The alcohol has much less surface tension and quickly displaces the water producing a dynamic back wash.

Hi--thanks for the info. I live in an Apt complex with another behind me--I just have to get creative with my composition.  I do get some wonderful sun in late afternoon at my far right that causes the dirt outside my patio to have a wonderful red color similiar to to out West ( or from what I've seen from photos and  paintings) and there are always dog walkers.  Thanks again.

I just came across this stunning painting as I was browsing through the site and am totally impressed. As Benjamin said you have achieved an extraordinary result from a scene that many people would likely walk by without a second thought!  Great!
