An Online Artist's Coop for Artists who Paint on Location
I painted this early on a Sunday morning when it was quite quiet standing on a narrow bridge over the canal. I wanted to simplify as much as possible while still conveying something of the ornate nature of the building. Pale winter sun appeared sometimes to cast weak shadows over part of the facade.

I admire the handling of a high key painting (one which I seem unable to master). Brilliant how you kept the main dark tones leading to the bridge. The architecture is fantastically suggested - if the shadow on the building had been a darker key, it would have distracted the 'route' through the painting.

Comment by Robert Rohrich on December 31, 2011 at 5:35pm Michael, Your ability to edit complicated architectural detail is amazing. I have enjoyed all of your recent Venice paintings. However, what I do miss is not knowing the size you are working with.
Comment by Michael Richardson on December 31, 2011 at 7:37pm Hi Robert, sorry I thought I had added the sizes. Most of my Venice work was 10" x 12" (inc this one) as I was using my bitterroot box but I did a few 11x14s and the clock tower was 16" x 10" and then went down to a few 10x8s and 6x8s on the last couple of days when I ran out of bigger panels. I must get around to scanning those, there are another fifteen paintings lying about somewhere!
