An Online Artist's Coop for Artists who Paint on Location
8" x 10" Oil
Painted on a tea plantstion near Ooti, in the Nilgiri Hills, South India. These ladies are paid by the number of burlap sacks that they can fill with tea leaves on that day. The crew of women were very excited and surprised to see artists, and in their amazement, they stood still for about 15 seconds while I sketced their body shapes on my canvas. The painting was completed as they 'picked' their way down the row of plants, and I worked quickly to capture the billiant colors of their outfits, the intensity of the color of the new tea leaves, set against the hazy distance of the Niligiri hills behind them.
Comment by Sharron Boxenbaum on May 14, 2012 at 7:39am Love your stories of India - somewhere I've always wanted to visit - and your paintings! Beautiful colors here.
Comment by Cecile Hines on May 14, 2012 at 7:44am These are wonderful paintings Debra and better still with the narrative.
Comment by Debra Joyce Dawson on May 14, 2012 at 2:27pm I certainly appreciate your comments Sharron and Cecile. India is a great place, if you can ignor the dirt, and also, as an Indian man told me before I went the first time, "you aren't afraid of people."
Comment by Lynne Haines on May 18, 2012 at 10:51pm Amazing. Come and paint with me this fall in Lincoln WA Sept 21 - 23rd. Last year the artist retreat with Nikoai Kraneis was amazing. Have you seen the video? I really like your work and I think you would find this area inspirational. You can see more of it at www.lincolnlakecabin.com.
Comment by Debra Joyce Dawson on May 19, 2012 at 1:46pm Hi Lynne. Thank you for that invitation. I am scheduled to do a plein air workshop in West Virginia September 28 - 29, and a color workshop on Bainbridge Island, WA for the Winslow Art Center October 12 - 14. I wish there was a way I could come out there for your event and not have to go home in between. I haven't seen the video, but I will certainly look at it to see what this is all about. Thanks for giving me the heads up on it. I appreciate your comments more than you know. Thank you so much. :)
