Mummy Cave Ruins - Canyon del Muerto

8"x12" Oil on linen
It took a $200 private jeep tour and one hour to cover the 19 miles to this location. Had one hour to paint this before our Navajo guide, Dan, started us on our way back. The entire cliff face is twice as high as what you see here. This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

Amazing work for an hour —they would have had to drag me out of there.

Thanks Cicile and Ed.  It was great painting colors very different from where I live and sheer and undercut cliffs up to 1000 feet tall decorated with stains. For scale you can see a little doorway to the left of the ruin with a stone tower. Go see this place when you get a chance.

I used to live in Gallup and would roam the county sides on my days off, beautiful country.

Damien, are you using a black on your palette, or is that a mix. Also are you rendering in grisialle first or putting down tones.

Thanks

Had some black on the palette but the deepest darks in the forground are Thalo+alizarin with cobalt blue and ultrumarine and burnt sienna with touches of titanium white used in combination moving into the distance. The photo makes all the deeper darks look the same which can't be. Deeper darks in shadows and stains near to far are stepped in value and tone. This is all direct tones over a quick charcoal pencil drawing.

Always a pleasure to see your work! Love how you've captured the sheer scale of these giants.

Thanks Sherron for looking them over.

Fabulous.  I can see Mummy looking out at me, chuckle.  No really, I am a great fan.  I paint fast too.  They are the best.  This is a marvelous piece.

Thanks Lynne. I hope all is well.
