Damien M. Gonzales

Website: damiengonzales.com

Damien is a self-taught artist whose appreciates the dramatic terrain and weather that make the Southwest extraordinarily beautiful and unique. New Mexico is well known for some of the most inspiring and frequently represented artistic subject matter used by artists, past and present, ranging from stark dry desert landscapes to high snow covered alpine peaks. The region's famous art communities and long artistic history help make this an ideal location for an artist.

Damien aspires to paint full time. He finds tremendous support and inspiration from other local artists. His main interest in landscape painting springs from his desire to convey his appreciation of the natural surroundings and his early exposure to the works of many great landscapists including Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Edgar Payne, Wilson Hurley, Robert Lougheed, Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida and others. Though the bold and direct painting styles typically found in southwestern landscape painting lend themselves well to the area's rugged subject matter, Damien is also strongly influenced by more impressionistic and less direct painting approaches common in other parts of the country and the world.

Damien works as a design engineer and his technical background is applied to evey painting. His attention to compostion, values, and color merge with the feeling and emotion that he tries to evoke in each piece.
Since September of 2009 he has focused primarily on plein air work, which he finds the most challenging and rewarding.

enjoyed viewing your pics, esp. desert shots.  glad you liked my painting, I'm still busy in my first calling, would like to, and I'm just trying to get out and about more with my paintings.  If you're ever in the Napa Valley, stop by...artists are welcome to paint in my humble little vineyard of cabernet grapes.  If you like cabernet sauvignon, I made some from my own fruit (most of which I sell to local wine makers....about 6 tons worth from about an acre of land.  I've posted some of my other paintings on my web if you ever get a chance to look...www.napavalleypainter.com...

Hey Damien.........I really do appreciate , first your skills as a painter, artist......and I know you already know this, but it never hurts to hear it......I really enjoy your paintings....when I see them.....it feels { a certain truth being expressed}....also just reading how you seem to approach painting......pretty intellectual....among other attributes........so many ways to approach painting........I am a bit more of an intuitive painter, I think.......and Its fun to read the back and forth , between you and David Freedman, another fine painter.......so thanks....Tom

Very strong work Damien. I was very impressed. I was also impressed that you are self-taught. You admire many of the painters that I admire. Thomas Moran is right at the top of my list too. I just finished a book on Moran. I love his plein air sketchs using goauche I believe with watercolor. I looked at your images and yearned to be back in NM, you have really caught the feel and color of the place. One painting in particular I have painted in the same spot and I also believe Arturo Chavez, whom I am sure you know, if you don't know his work you must look him up. But the spot I am referring to is on the open space area looking at the Sandia's the "thumb" I think it is called. Here is my painting. It was the second time I painted in NM and I couldn't believe the colors were that vivid.

Damien,

Actually I don't paint very often. I get a bunch of work done during plein air "events" but at home my commercial work keeps me tied up. I do get to go to Sedona in a couple weeks and I am sure I will get another bunch done. I always enjoy seeing your work.
