Gabor Svagrik was born in Szeged, Hungary. His family immigrated to the United States and settled in Illinois. Svagrik studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he was fortunate to study with nationally recognized watercolorist Irving Shapiro who stressed the importance of composition, design, and drawing.
Svagrik studied life drawing and illustration and joined the Palette & Chisel, where he studied with Scott Burdick. Since moving to Tucson, Arizona he has also taken workshops with Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Robert Moore. Svagrik devotes several weeks a year to teaching his own workshops at the Tucson Art Academy, which he founded and owns with his wife. He has also taught at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, Lyme Art Association and other schools around the country.
Svagrik’s passion for painting on location has always been an important process for him to capture the balance between mood, color and natural light. He is particularly inspired by pristine locations and the essential truth of nature. He knows he has succeeded when viewers sense the desert heat, the chill in the air, or the mist over an ocean.

"Eye catching to say the least. Brave use of foreground color too. But I really love the overall design in this one. I'm a little iffy about the connection between the right foreground rocks and the middle of the painting right…"

John Budicin Workshop at Tucson Art Academy
What an honor to have Plein Air Painters of America signature member John Budicin
teach for us at the Tucson Art Academy. He had a wonderful week and the
weather was just perfect. We had students from all over the country and they
were very impressed with our landscape. John took them to many great locations. He
painted a demo every day, which the students found very helpful.…

Albert Handell Workshop at Tucson Art Academy
Master pastel artist Albert Handell had a great week at the Tucson Art Academy. The weather could not have been better. Sun and mid 70’s all week. The students got a real treat with Albert. He has been painting for over 50 years and teaching for over 35. They traveled to all parts of Tucson and painted great pieces. He does a slide presentation one of the evenings and there you get to see paintings from the span of his career. What a treat.…
