PAINTING IN MAURITIUS BY GEORGIE REY

The way I work.

I like to paint in the same place for several months doing all sorts of colour samples and sketches. I tend to find a quiet place like in this gorge with 7 waterfalls and enjoy going there with my dogs to paint.  I enjoy exploring it from all different viewpoints, walking around it, and generally getting to know it in depth.

I find that from studying the place for a long time I get to the bottom of it eventually and something quite loose, colourful and big comes out at the end of a 6 month period. I won't show you here as they were done in the studio, you can visit my blog if you're interested. See below for details.  It seems I'm the only one who paints like this here, but I have read articles about other artists who do many many studies before tackling the 'big picture'!  Peter Lanyon for example, a Cornish artist in the 50's from England, worked like this.

Anyway, I thought I'd explain a bit about my way of working. I suppose I'm heading in an abstract direction...we'll see, but this is the way I feel I should go. I'm more interested in the feeling of the place, or painting the feeling I get when in the place than the visual picture.

I am painting myself reflected in the landscape. I can feel figures in parts of my landscapes.i.e. when painting beaches I feel the forms of sand are my body. I read in a book about art by Agnes Martin "Say to yourself: I am going to work in order to see myself and free myself. Whilst working and in the work I must be on the alert to see myself. When I see myself in the work I will know that that is the work I am supposed to do." When I read this I felt great relief as if I'd understood what I am painting.

Vol au Vent

I've been back every day to this spot to try and catch the light on the fields and the shadows on the hills..but they move so fast and the drawing is tricky..I go straight in drawing with my big long brush. I took my two sketches I did in the morning and together with a photograph did this...I've not painted like this before but I feel it's what I'm aiming at: tone and limited palette. There's still more work to be done.…

Hi Georgina.

The main thing to watch out for when painting sun reflections in water is to make the lower part of the sky much darker than you would normally (make it even darker above the sunlit part of the water). As with most painting problems concerning the intensity of sunlight, if your painting fails to capture it, the answer usually lies in making the surrounding areas darker, rather than washing all the colour out of the brightest reflections. Have fun.

Dear Georgina Thanks for your kind invitation but I'm recovering from a big operation and will not be out and about for a long while yet (still waiting for a biopsy result which I am not looking forward too!!).  When I do paint outside, I tend to paint on my own as I like to 'hide' in corners as I am really shy when people approach.  Kind regards  Linda
