"Hank,   Wonderful interplay on the surface of the water. 95% of all water painted does not get the character it deserves, I can feel the breeze on the back of my neck with this one. Great job."

Toned grounds

Here I tried a couple of toned grounds. I have a couple other colors ready to try (sienna and cad red) and just need the time to do them. Yellow ochre ground showing through on the unfinished bush to the right:

This one is small and I did it as fast as I could. It took about 30 minutes. Raw umber (+ white) ground.…

Hank

I checked out your website & blog, nice work!!!
Looks like you will have your hands full for awhile with the four little ones.
I have one son who will be 21 soon. a junior at PITT

I do recognize you from the photos, what year did you graduate from RISD & what major?
I was "84, Illustration Who would have thought that I would make my living as a painter.

i enjoy seeing a toned ground showing through the final painting in spots. in your painting of the picnic table it unifies the entire painting

many of the large large ones are studio work from smaller studies, but I am not afraid of doing large outdoors. In Italy I just lay the canvas, unstretched taped to a board I guy there and ay it all on a stone wall. glad you got by the show.

Yes, the vertical palette is great for plein air, it gets you at eye level and the limited palette stays cleaner. I had a neck injury and could not look down so it has become handy and a better way to see the colors close to your painting,no glare and easy. Just get a light weight easel and set it close to your normal easel, but weight the bottoms with clips or stones or if you have a soltek, then put it below your painting. In the studio I have an old palette box with glass in it nailed to an old easel.

Hi Hank. I wasn't sure where to answer your question about my vertical palette, but if you go back to my page, I left an explanation there. Thanks. Karen

Hi Hank. It is a box that my husband, who is also a painter, made. It has shelves to hold the value scales that I mix. A hinged cover, that folds down and sits flat (horizontal) on the "table" part of my easel, is used for mixing. I use a bungie cord to hold the palette box onto the easel.

It was early morning, late August or early September. The light was just great in that spot.

Thanks for the compliment. You have some really nice paintings of the PA landscape. I am from Pittsburgh originally. Was back for a visit this summer. Also went to Gettysburg. Beautiful country.
