Jeanean Songco Martin commented on Tony Robinson's group Plein Eire (Irish Plein Air Painters)
Jeanean Songco Martin joined Tony Robinson's groupJeanean is a full-time painter and a professional musician. Art and music go hand in hand and compliment each other. She is very active in the arts community with portrait and life drawing groups and conducts plein-air workshops locally in the Mid-Atlantic area and internationally. Plein air workshops abroad include Ireland, England, France and Germany. In June 2012 Maine will be the workshop destination. September 2012 she will return to one of her favorite places Ghost Ranch in Abiquii and Taos New Mexico for the third time. She has taught painting and drawing at The Delaplaine Visual Arts Center , Rockville Arts Place, Hood College, Montgomery College and a 17 year span of teaching every summer at Common Ground on the Hill at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. Jeanean is constantly striving to improve and refine her skills and looks forward to her next one person show focusing on work done in New Mexico.
ARTIST STATEMENT:“In my work, I try to empathize with the retinal image, to try to find a connection in creating a “felt” sense of structure, form and value. I am a very tonal painter and utilize the value structure to create a sense of drama.I always begin very gestural and loose; trying to get at the inner structure first to re-create the movement inside the form. My marks are results of a building process; strokes building form, creating a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. Color is introduced sometimes gently, inviting the thin washes to come into play or attacking the elusive momentary light condition with alla-prima painting. The thick and juicy stuff of paint is what I love and hope to preserve on the surface. I work towards a contrast of subtle passages with soft tones or rich glazes and strong direct painting continuously building, refining and reducing the image to its essential core."My working method for the landscapes is to paint en plein-air. The small to medium sized works are done alla prima with very little change once brought into the studio. I do make some adjustments and additions but am very cautious not to lose the "freshness" from direct observation. They are "moments in time". I will sometimes return to the same place and the same time of day and weather conditions to continue working on a larger plein-air piece on consecutive days. I have been known to drag really large canvasses out of doors and work on site. I do still enjoy doing that because of the energy in the mark from a direct connection to the "physical experience" that is sometimes lost when working in the studio I also work in the studio from smaller plein-air paintings to create more formal and much larger interpretations. I use my sketchs and photographs for referencing but only after working on the site and being familiar with the landscape can I successfully interpret the forms and especially the color correctly. There is no substitute for actually "being there". The challenge is to keep the same energy and fluid mark that sparked the first impression.

Hi Jeanean!
Good to hear from you. I think I can go to the event at Chincoteague. Please let me know if there's a place to crash. I'll sleep anywhere as long as I'm not sleeping in the same room as a mosquito. : ) This is a great site; I look forward to exploring it more and getting to know other artists and their work. I was at Easton Plein Aire Festival, worked on a painting and went to see the amazing paintings completed for the quick draw. Good stuff!

Maryann Pranulis said… Hi Jeanean! Thanks for your comment on my posting. I thought I did join the "pleinairbuddies" group when I joined. I guess I did something wrong! So now what do I do? I don't want to be listed as a solo.
Thanks,
Maryann
Maryann Pranulis said… Jeanean,
I tried to join the group by clicking on "groups" at the top of the web page but it wanted me to "create" a new group, not join one. I'll try again tomorrow.

I tried again to join the group but still get the "add a new group" essage -- can't seem to just be added to your group. Help?

Sharron Boxenbaum said… hi Jeanean,
Yes it is hard not to say I am from MD, keeping typing old address, started to put AZ as I am trying to spend more and more time out west.
This Nov. for a trip? Or Nov. 2012? A group or just you & family? I have several places that are local easy drives from Phoenix/Scottsdale area. If you are looking for some overnights here and there got some places for that too. I wil be up for a long weekend when Artomatic opens Sept. 28th heading back to VA Oct. 2nd. Maybe we can talk more about options for painting in AZ. I am doing my volunteer work that weekend for Artomatic will be there 10 - 3 Thur., Fri., & Sat. If you are around come on by and see me. Will also be around for all the 1st Sat. evenings.
Looking at Blue Ridge Mtns. for doing some plein air painting too.
Marilu has show with her daughter Tracy this weekend and she maybe hanging her work this Sat. or next forget which. But, should be a nice room with lots of nature and wildlife images.
Have you hung your work yet? Can't wait to see the whole place all full of art and artists. take care, L
Elena Maza said… Jeanean,
I love the idea, and of doing an overnight trip so we could paint the next day. Where would we stay and how expensive would it be? I'm taking classes all day Saturday on Nov. 5 and 19. That leaves only the weekend of Nov 12-13 for this. Would that work for you and the others? Please let me know.
This is an easy and inexpensive carrier. Perfect for travelling and plein air painting.
DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING A PAINTING CARRIER:
1 PIECE OF FOAMCORE (found at art supply stores like Michaels)
Place on a flat surface. Divide foamcore in 1/2. Draw a line down the middle. Measure 1 in on either side of this line, this is wear you will cut into. Using a straight edge and a utility knife cut…

Just completed my itinerary for my plein air workshop to New Mexico the last two weeks of September 2012. One day will include an "East Meets West" paint out. My group from Maryland/Virginia/Pennsylvania will be spending a glorious day painting on the Sandia Mountains with the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico. Please check out the workshop details on my website:
