Artist Statement

I paint with love, love for both the subject of my paintings and for the process of painting itself.  I try to rely on my inner spirit for the creativity and guidance in the execution of my paintings. Whether I paint “plein air” or in my studio, I like to think that my inner spirit of creativity is really the Holy Spirit at work.  To begin a painting I await my inner spirit to nudge me into the painting mode. That love will express itself in a desire to ,interpret the subject matter and method to execute the painting.   My main purpose of painting: to communicate my inner spirit to yours with a passion. I have several aims: To produce strong and colorful paintings with an economy of strokes, to paint quickly and energetically and focusing on the “idea” of the painting. Some would call my work impressionist and representational with the use of bright colors with pure hues.  Mixing of colors occurs mostly on the paper

Jim... our plein air group OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) is painting in Wilmington on Sunday, May 1st. We are all meeting in the parking lot of the USS North Carolina Battleship to paint the Wilmington waterfront. We plan to start at 1PM... pack a picnic lunch and join us. Check out our blog for details soon...

Jim-Thanks so much for your compliment re my watercolors. As I write this I am watching your paintings crossing the screen. Your work is beautiful and I love the great color and composition. My favorites are the two snow scenes. I know what you mean about those birthdays and staying busy. I think I might have to un-retire to get some rest. Again, thank you for the nice compliment.

Thanks Jim on your comments. I admire your use of color. Keep sharing, thanks. I've never painted in the NC area. Maybe someday during my trips back and forth from Florida to Maine I'll stop in your state for a try.

Thanks for your kind words.  I like your painting "Betty's" as my wife's name is Betty.  I also appreciate your approach to plein air, creative ideas.  You remind me somewhat of Don Maier's work.  He was out last spring on his infamous road trip and inspired Lynn Haine's and I to start the Plein Air Ranch Retreat on my ranch in Eastern Washington.  If you are into traveling come on out and paint!

I love your new pochade box for watercolor... have you taken it on the road yet?  Is it heavy?  My primary concern is weight, I have a bad back and lugging heavy equipment wears me out before I even start to paint. I'd be interested to hear your reports on how your box performs in the field.
