There is Resume' on that site as well. :-) http://home.comcast.net/~joysolney My paintings are contemporary impressionist in style. I combine strong composition and values while using the effects of natural light. I like to catch the significant characteristic and energy of the people in my paintings and drawings. I combine this casual spontaneity with my classical training to produce my original pieces. In my landscapes I hope to conjure up memories of a time in our lives or a desired place yet to visit. I was born in Bordeaux, France. My family returned to Philadelphia in the early 1950's when my father retired from the diplomatic service. I was surrounded by European and Asian art in my home and enjoyed visits to museums in the area. I attended Tyler College of Art while still in high school. I was fortunate to have excellent instructors and filled many sketch pads. I became a full time student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Immediately after art school I had a one person show in New York City. I continued to show and win prizes in New York and Philadelphia as well as teaching art and painting portraits. In addition to creating individual pieces, I designed and executed theatre stage sets for eight years.
The world around me and the people in it inspire me. The artist whose work I most admire is John Singer Sargent. Having lived in Bellingham for over twenty years, I've shown at many of the local galleries as well as Bellevue, Edmonds, and in 2004 won best in show at the Anacortes Art at the Port show. In 2009 won first price for an oil painting in the Juried Gallery show at Edmonds Art Festival. My goal is to keep painting and hopefully bring joy to others through my art work.

Abstract Plein Air

Often when we paint plein air we have to paint quickly to capture the image before the light changes too much. This calls for a simplification of the subject to its basic elements, also known as abstraction.

Joy,
As an artist that I truly respect the compliment is taken with much thanks. Your website is very nicely done. If ever we could get together and do some "plein air" painting I would enjoy that greatly.

Joy,
I think that's a gret idea. I will have to leave that for someone else as I am one of those people that don't have an extended knowlede of how that works. My phone number is 733-3447 if you care to call and set up a "plein air" meeting sometime. Call anytime if you wish.

Hi again Joy,
I just watched the short video of Larry Seilre's and it was really informative. He's a nice painter.

Of course, call or email any time you are coming my way. I am going to try to make it up to Bellingham this weekend to paint. I'm on some deadlines, though, so it might be brief.

Joy, great site. I am moving toward a plein air goal very slowly. The idea of joining a group for an outing sounds like fun. I am not ready for mountain climbing, but chasing after Snow Geese might be doable. I will go back to the Northwest WA group, if I can re-find it, and join.
As always, it is really nice to be in your neighborhood and see your recent work. erin
