Larry is a signature member of International Plein Air Painters of America, starting out painting professionally in 1980 as a wildlife artist of reputation, winning the title of Wisconsin's Wildlife Artist of the Year in 1984...competing and winning in numerous state and national stamp design contests.
Awed and haunted by the experience of seeing Richard Schmid's winning National Arts for the Parks piece of a Rocky Mountain waterfalls in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the late 80's...Larry knew remaining indoors to paint about what he loved outdoors was a paradox he could no longer endure! Nearly ninety-percent of his work is painted outdoors year round in Wisconsin's north woods national forests and Upper Michigan.
Larry is a long time staff member/moderator of the well known Wetcanvas.com virtual community, has written a 307 page book on painting landscapes, "The Art of Seeing & Doing"...numerous videos on YouTube demonstrating painting, a DVD on painting a waterfalls, and currently working on a book tentatively titled, "Learning to Paint Painterly Realism"
Every artist tends to have some they would cite as influential to their works over the years, Larry's is wildlife artist/plein air painter Carl Rungius, painter/teachers Edgar Payne, Emile A. Gruppe and John F. Carlson. Larry has traveled extensively teaching painter's workshops, as well as hosts two workshops annually in NE Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.
