Mill Pond in NE Wisconsin...a digital finger painting

"I've been doing a few myself but nothing as good as this."

Larry is a signature member of International Plein Air Painters of America, starting out painting professionally in 1980 as a wildlife artist of reputation, winning the title of Wisconsin's Wildlife Artist of the Year in 1984...competing and winning in numerous state and national stamp design contests.

Awed and haunted by the experience of seeing Richard Schmid's winning National Arts for the Parks piece of a Rocky Mountain waterfalls in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the late 80's...Larry knew remaining indoors to paint about what he loved outdoors was a paradox he could no longer endure! Nearly ninety-percent of his work is painted outdoors year round in Wisconsin's north woods national forests and Upper Michigan.

Larry is a long time staff member/moderator of the well known Wetcanvas.com virtual community, has written a 307 page book on painting landscapes, "The Art of Seeing & Doing"...numerous videos on YouTube demonstrating painting, a DVD on painting a waterfalls, and currently working on a book tentatively titled, "Learning to Paint Painterly Realism"

Every artist tends to have some they would cite as influential to their works over the years, Larry's is wildlife artist/plein air painter Carl Rungius, painter/teachers Edgar Payne, Emile A. Gruppe and John F. Carlson. Larry has traveled extensively teaching painter's workshops, as well as hosts two workshops annually in NE Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Thought I'd Give Digital Plein Air Painting a little go...

Not looking to replace my oils, gouache, acrylics...but, fun is fun...and I'm always intrigued by something new, different.  When at first difficult, I am even more intrigued and suddenly obsessed.

Last night got out for an hour and painted this one...sitting in my truck, using an ipad 2...started with a stylus, but soon…

Amazing Experience in Alaska...!

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Alaska, and I had the most wonderful students to work with.  Alaskan artists are geared, wired to embrace their weather.  Rain, chill, mist, whatever the forecast...a bit of a shrug of the shoulders and a smile of assurance,…

I would like to see some of your paintings painted in a larger scale. You don't name them so I can't say which ones unless I describe here. I will wait. I love your grays. The back ground light in some of the woodland paintings is awesome. I love those colors!! So hard to mix but worth taking the time to get it right.

It is interesting to hear that I am sensitive to asymmetry.. I spent a lot of time when young, bemoaning how the powerful attraction to the symmetrical takes the upper hand with most of us; so much so that many interesting things are missed or ignored. I must have finally beaten it back a bit.. Thank you for your thoughtful and complimentary comments. Criticism is also very welcome.. Criticism shines the light for progress.

Hello Larry, Thanks for your comments on The Cattle Ramp. Just watched your video Naples Yellow and loved it. I frequently set a 45 min. timer for a 6x8 still life which also makes me very deliberate with my brush strokes. Next one I'll try counting. Walter
P.S. Even though I live in in Tucson, I have a cabin a few miles outside of Boulder Junction. Maybe I'll see you up there sometime.

Hi Larry, Thank you for your recent comments on my work. When I began plein air sixteen years ago, I had everyone and their brother telling me to stop when I just began a new painting. But I could not, I wanted to say more. So I would go out to the same location, same light and paint till I was done. I love to push a painting to that point. I also love quick plein air that get to the point quick, I do these type for my field studies and future large pieces. I don't enjoy quick one as much as I love the slow plein air. I enjoy others quick plein air. Thank you again
