Mike Kowalski left a comment for Randy Saffle
"Randy,   I live in a great spot for painting. Mostly rural, with the "Historic Seaport" town of Port Townsend only 18 miles away. There are some great classic wooden boats around and actually a wooden boatbuilding school as well. It…"

Carols Tractor

"That sounds right up my alley Mike. You should sit in for me at the next Tractor Day. I would love to see you do one. I'm lucky to live a block from a farm that has five tractors, red barn and various other equipment on it. It has become…"

Plein Air Oil Painter

Texas native, Randy Saffle has worked as an Illustrator/Designer for over twenty years designing logos and signage for many of the nations top companies. His diverse artistic background also includes designing toys and illustrating children’s books and comics.
“As an illustrator, I've always created art to fit others needs. Oil painting offers me the opportunity to create with more emotion and lasting appeal. I enjoy painting outdoors and working quickly in the ever-changing light. I try to keep my paintings fresh and spontaneous. My favorite subject matter is rural Texas. “
As a member of the Outdoor Painters Society, Randy can be found painting outdoors, en plein air all over Texas.

I work in small sizes on location, usually in the 9” x 12” range. Working small allows me the time for selecting and honing an idea, even in fleeting light, and allows me to explore several different subjects in a day. Most small field sketches I create are finished works in their own right, saying everything I have to say about a subject. The rest serve as reference material for larger, more carefully orchestrated studio paintings.
My field sketches generally are completed in two hours or less. I use a relatively simple palette for both field and studio work, comprised of: Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Phathlo Blue, Ultramarine Blue and Titanium White.

Twilight ( No Vampires or Werewolves...sorry )

This is a studio painting based on some photos I took in Fredericksburg, TX. My wife and I left our boys at the hotel and went off for an adventure. The sun was disappearing right before my eyes, but I managed to snap a couple photos before it was gone. I don't have a lot of experience painting this large or painting from photographs, so this was a challenge. My camera was set on "night photo" and I realized this brightened my pictures and almost made them look like they…

Thanks. I do enjoy color and the effects that light has on it. Looks like we are drawn to similar subjects.

Thanks Randy, The boat was on the Little Caillou at Cocodrie, Lousiana. Late May, Judy Crowe invited 6 of us gals to join her in renting a camphouse in Cocodrie for a week and painted all around. I have a bunch of shrimp boat paintings. This was just as the oil spill happened and they were so worried about their livelyhood. Nice people down there. Had to learn a little cajun to understand them.... Did you get the message about the lavender plein air?
