Painting the Spirit of the Land
With the moods of nature as his inspiration, the artist explores the
relationship between art, Creation, and the human spirit in his
boldly-brushed acrylic paintings.
Rick is a long-time painter of California land – and seascapes. An exuberant
calligraphy is the hallmark of Delanty’s style. The artist describes it as an “expressionistic realism”, which might evoke California coastline, the coastal
cliffs of Maine, or the mountains and waterfalls of Yosemite. Design, art principles
and color relationships are as important to him as sense of place. The poetic
simplicity of his work mirrors Aristotle’s philosophy: “The aim of art is to represent
not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”
Recently, Rick’s awards include “Collectors’ Choice’ and “Sponsor’s Award” at the
2009 Sedona Plein Air Invitational. Rick has been an invited artist at the
10th, 11th , and 12th Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational, was awarded Best of Show at 2008 Borrego Springs, and twice received first place in the “Paint San
Clemente” competition. Rick has been an invited artist at the Crystal Cove
Alliance’s art exhibition for preservation of the State Park’s cottages, and is
an invited artist at Crystal Cove’s plein air gallery within the park.
He has exhibited originals at the Laguna Museum of Art, Mission San Juan
Capistrano, and San Clemente’s Casa Romantica Cultural Center.
Professional organizations: Artist Member of Laguna Plein Air Painters Assn.
(LPAPA), California Art Club, Southern California Art Assn., Southern California
Plein Air Painters, and Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA).
Rick has served as an arts educator, demonstrator, juror, and advocate for the arts.
Style and Technique: Rick works both in the studio and outdoors, believing that studying his subjects from life--as both a painter and draftsman--brings creative authenticity to his work as a contemporary realist. Hardboard and canvas are his substrates for painting. Scraping, rubbing and impasto accents create a variety of surface, along with the use of boldly-state color. Form is depicted in a natural, gestural and abstract manner, inviting the viewer to participate in experiencing the painting.
A reflection of the divine power of God’s creation in nature is the artist’s goal
for each of his paintings. “It is my intent that those who connect with my work will
be uplifted, to reflect on the original works of God that surround us.”
