Artist Statement
I produce a lot of St Lawrence River Art featuring the Thousand Islands Region because that is where I live and find inspiration, as well as inspiration from travel and Museum visits.
My passions are plein air painting landscapes, mostly in oils. and life/figure, mostly in watercolors. plus some portraits. My favorite contemporary plein air artist is Kevin D. Macphearson and I find his two books  very inspirational and influential. I work also in acrylic, pastel, and mixed media. My subject matter is eclectic and along with my mood will influence the medium. I am more interested in the creation process, rather than being master of one medium, subject, or style. I have created art since childhood, periodically finding stretches of several years during my past business career where I had time to take a workshop or participate in group life drawing sessions. I sold paintings off the walls in my corporate office and was often called on to create a specific piece of art to humanize a business situation. I always took art materials on my travels and did a lot of on site painting and sketching over a twenty year period. I treasure these more than the photos. Countries visited include, Greece, Turkey, France, Australia, Itlay and China.
In April 2009 I formed Plein Air Painters Thousand Islands Region (PAPTIR) in order to promote Plein Air Painting in the region. From May through October I organize an event every second Wednesday and generally have four to seven artists.Events were sponsored by the Thousand Island Bridge Authority-Boldt Castle (Alexandria Bay NY) in  2009 and 2011. This year we are averaging about 8 artists and had 14 at Singer Castle in September 2010. I also work with local organizations in organizing Plein Air Contests.

Definition of a Plein Air Painting

In reviewing a number of websites for plein air event descriptions, plein air organizations and groups, and plein air artist web sites (individual and social) there is a range of definitions of what constitutes a plein air work. What do you think is appropriate? Obviously, what an artist does to get a work representative of their style and present it to the public for sale or judging is fine. I am only interested in what you think should be legitimately labeled a plein air work. Here are a… Continue

Plein Air Contest Rules

I would like to hear from artists who have participated in plein air contests where an entry fee (jury fee or just to participate fee) was paid and prize money was involved. I would like to know if most contests work on the honor system or have specific rules in the following aspects:

1) Did your in-process, unused stamped blank surfaces, or completed paintings have to be checked in each evening and checked out the next morning for an event that lasted more than on day? The obvious resaon… Continue

Robert--I had the same question about "Jina". Sent a head's up note to Donald yesterday and de-friended this poster until there is more information. Started wondering about searching stock photo databases of smiling women with long hair but decided that would be a needle in a haystack. But I love a good mystery!

Hi Robert,

Maybe "Jina" is a bot? Here's a blogger on artreview.com talking about spammers on Ning using "friend requests."

Everything here is from paint outs around Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio and then a week ago I spent a week traveling around in Arkansas painting. Some of my friends have done painting of the items you talked about and I do not have a problem with subject matter. Now I have had artist do work of subject matter that is not real to the settings now I do have a problem with that because it is not really in the sprite of plain air nor do I like seeing work done that takes a lot of liberties as to color or to the setting of the natural subject being painted. If you takes all of these liberties why are they painting outside when they could do that inside.

Hi Robert,

I was talking to a painting colleague last night about plein air painting and the onset of winter. Funny thing is, we both came to the realisation that the most striking plein air paintings are very often those painted in poor weather conditions. So roll on winter!

Good luck with the website. In the meantime, why not get a blog going - it's a great painting stimulant, in the sense that the blog must be "fed" frequently! I use Blogspot (seamlessly linked to my website) - it's fairly easy to use and completely free. And you can do it totally separate from a website if you wish.

Robert,
I thought of a few more little things on the plein air events. At Estes Park there was a large fee but it was used for advertising. It was worth it because they advertised in Southwest Art and Art Collector magazine. The artists were also allowed to participate in a group ad in those magazines on our dollar which again was worth it. On your question #1 about stamping canvas- at both Alameda and Estes Plein air we had a two week painting period. We could come into the gallery at the start of the time period and any time during to stamp our canvas. All work was due at the end of the time period- Friday morning from 9:00-1:00pm, they had to be framed properly and of course have the stamp on the back. I think that most artists stay with the prescribed rules- I have found that the "Sunday painters" for lack of a better term abused the rules. Most professional artist do not want to get in trouble because the plein air community is small. Word gets around very quickly of people who others knew of cheating or of bending the rules too much. Each of these events were juried- not come one come all. You might check the websites of the Alameda, CA. Plein air, and San Clemente Plein air for their rules. They have had enough experience in the past shows to have learned some things that work and what doesn't. Another nice thing was the surrounding community gave artists discounts at their business's, a well known framer set up shop for the week with discounts, we had langers well designed that we were asked to wear so that people would learn about the events. After all our work was turned in, there were get togethers at happy hours- fun. Then on Saturday morning of the Reception, there was a Quick Draw held. The organizers had models set up on chairs, a couple of still lifes set up, or we could just paint what ever we wanted, (no photos) just from life of course. Artists had a choice if they wanted to participate. We had 90 minutes, then the works are framed/wired to hang. At noon there was an auction of the fresh wet paintings. Also there was the announcment of the Receptions opening times. Great fun and a challenge. Sales were down this year but it isn't just sales that are the benefit of these events. It is meeting people who then want to have your newsletter, or want to start following your shows. I have sold paintings well after the plein air events to folks I met at the events, they just weren't ready to pull the trigger. Maybe if your schedule allows, apply for the Estes Park Colorado or Alameda Calif. in 2010- they are great fun.
