Les Wilson Rig
This is one of the first new wells to be drilled in our area. Thirty years ago this was a common sight. It was a lot of fun to paint this and it's interesting that something so industrial can make beautiful painting.

Sawtooths Beyond The Harbor
After driving 14 hours to Grand Marais, I took time the first evening to paint this view from the breakwater looking across the harbor to the Sawtooth Mountains.

"I've tried it and don't like it either. Have been lucky to get some nice "Jack Frost" in some of my work with plain water, on cold press (I think that may have come from the paper still being a little warm) but mostly it bunches…"

Thanks for your kind comments about my work. Yes the watercolour painting of Avoca was done in Europe - Ireland in fact! Avoca is a beautiful village in the Wicklow mountains about one and a half hours drive from where I live. I met a group of painter friends there last week on a stunning day (unusual for this part of the world) and painted the watercolour standing in the shade under a bridge. Spencer,
When you take your sketches back to the studio, do you just uses them as reference or are you actually doing the fine work on the original sketch? I ask because I can't seem to get the sharp edges and controlled lines in the field that I can get working in my studio. Your more recent "architectural" paintings have an amazing crispness and precision to the edges. I'm not sure how to get that.

All my plein air work is done almost exclusively on location. The only things I've been adding in the studio are the people. I add them in the studio where I feel a bit more confident. I'm afraid I'll mess up a nice painting trying that in the field. I am working to get comfortable with adding "action" items in the field.
I have been pushing myself hard to paint plein air. Since I have been doing that I feel like my paintings have taken on a more colorful, vibrant and light filled intensity that adds a greater sense of life to the work.
This morning I went out with the intention of painting cars on a car lot. I figured it wouldn't turn out well, and overall, I was right. I tightened up too much on most of it, however, the cars on the car lot did turn out pretty good. Having said that I will probably just crop it down to a smaller size to make a nice little painting.
