Trial Island Rain oils 8 x 10

Trial Island got its name when newly-built sailing vessels and steamships sailed there on trials from Victoria's Inner Harbour. It was raining today and my two umbrellas couldn't keep every drop from reaching my palette. Nonetheless I stayed the course and produced this little plein air study.…

Plein Air - Documenting Local Landmarks

"Saturday Market" - 11x14 watercolor -

Nothing ever stays the same....except for a moment in time captured by a plein air artist. I painted Saturday Market during the farmer's market 2 years ago.  In the background is a "pocket park" (trees within) & left of that (the green building) is the 1879 Courthouse Cafe.  I love the home-town feel and energy that is always present in our downtown.  Saturday is one of my favorite days to…

Importance of Good Composition Over Craft and Beautiful Rendition.

The undeniable strength of Plein Air being realist or figurative rather than abstract or non-figurative art is obviously the paint in ‘front of the subject’ power it gives the communication rather than no interface with subject at all. Plein air thus fosters and relies on nurturing the expertise we value enormously for capturing truer subject integrity by virtue of being at the subject, seeing it honestly building abilities and the craft of painting for a far more truthful portrayal;…

Hudson River Excursion

I am planning a trip up the Hudson River in June.  Going to visit the popular sites of the Hudson River School.  I plan to camp part of the way, maybe a hotel or two.  Any interested plein air painters who want to hook up, contact me.  There will be a show of completed works at Lance Walker Fine Art in September.

A Plein Air Series of Manito Greenhouse & Conservatory

After having my driver side car window smashed out while PAing in a local river park, I decided to stay safe and PA somewhere very public.  And warm.  This winter was too cold for me to PA.  By January I was wild with cabin fever and decided to PA in the greenhouse until the weather warmed up.  I thought it might be a limited venue but I was wrong.  I am fascinated by all the things I wanted to PA and can't wait to go back!  Plus it's tropical and warm and that did me a world of good in and of… Continue

A Plein Air Painter's "Driving Meditation" While Seeking Locations to Paint

To my fellow landscape artists,

As plein air painters, we too often drive and chat -- about paints and brushes or collectors and galleries -- and forget to really pay attention to the surrounding nature as the landscape unfolds.…

The versatility and charm of oil pastel

The personal favourite medium is chosen for what we can achieve, some can work detail in oil far better than pastel, or visa versa, some preferring the lovely quality of watercolour ‘accident’. Pastels are great for outdoor work, especially loved for vibrant colour without mixing on palette, so sticks are first arranged in 4-6 tones you are working, then colour and temperature and painted direct on support.…
