At the Dunes

Did this last Saturday at the Waukegan, IL beach. It was a new experience for me since I have never been there before. Funny how things are right there under your nose and you don't see them. This beach is well hidden from the public and I guess there has been some environmental issues with the area, so Waukegan is starting to revitalize it and clean it up. Nice day to plein air. Let me… Continue

Other times it is totally inconvenient and you see… Continue

Meeting Lois Griffel

On Friday, August 7th, I attended an opening reception at The Henry Philips Gallery-The Hensche Gallery in Provincetown, MA and saw Lois Griffel's new works and purchased her new book...Painting Impressionist Color, Any Style, Any Medium. I have been carrying the book around and scribbling in the margins ever since...now I just need to get outside!

More from the Roman Campagna

Fellow painter and husband Joe Vinson and I just returned from our second trip to the Roman Campagna in a month. Once again between work appointments we got ample time to paint. Even though we have been visiting and working in this area for almost 10 years this was the first opportunity we had to paint in Castel S. Elia, another location on the Grand Tour of open air itineraries in…

Borghetto, Then and Now

In the Spring of 2004 I was allowed to hold a small sketch by J.M.W. Turner depicting a site that I had seen many times in life, a view of Borghetto in the Tiber Valley. This work was in a sketchbook of Turner now at the Tate Museum in London where Maddine Insalaco, my wife, and I were doing research on early outdoor painting. We’ve seen this place many times, including…
