Plein Air Asturias

Join me for a painting and walking holiday in northern Spain June 22-29, 2013. Asturias is a beautiful, pristine and diverse region - and one of the least toured areas in Spain. Accommodations are at Fuentes de Lucia, a newly restored farmhouse in the lush and picturesque Quiros Valley. We will travel daily by food and/or van, stopping to paint under the direction of artist/teacher Mary Padgett. All portable painting mediums and all levels welcome. For more information…

The Magic of Small Paintiners

Small paintings and plein air painting were made for each other. When we say small, we mean sizes 5” x 5”, 5” x 7”, 8” x10”.

The Benefits of painting small are numerous. Here are just a few of them:

  • Portable and lightweight
  • Perfect for capturing a quick impression of the fleeting effect of changing light and weather.
  • A low risk investment of your time.
  • Allows for experiments in design, composition and color.
  • Perfect for beginners and…

Starry Plough, a new experience ~ Entry #4

Wow, what a night at the Starry Plough in Berkeley. To retrace how I heard about this crazy Irish place, let me begin at the bookstore. While searching for a few more views into Irish life, a very helpful bookstore clerk suggested that I visit the Starry Plough on a Sunday evening for some traditional Irish music. After much coaxing and promises to not interrupt his football game viewing and snacking, DH (term for Dear Husband ) and I set out for a trip across the Richmond/San Rafael bridge in… Continue

Wide open spaces Entry #3

Yesterday I went out with a Plein air painting group in Marin where I live, and found myself in search of wide open spaces. In the seashore area of Marin there are many rolling hills, cliffs, deep caverns, rugged rocks and sprawling beaches you need to hike to in order to get your feet wet. The day was wildishly cold and dangerously beautiful. It was a fools day. Why? Because what appeared as beauty was masked by a closed car window protecting me from the elements. Whenever I ventured out of… Continue

trying something new

Recently finished a series of murals for a restaurant in NYC...definately needing a change.  Plein air looks like it will both provide a huge learning curve and a wonderful way to go.  Game for recommendations.

Beginning the process ~ entry #2

Today I registered on the U.S. site online for travelers staying abroad. It wasn't a huge step but it made me pull out my passport, etc. to register information. Hopefully I didn't expose myself to hackers. I need to learn to trust if I am traveling to Ireland ,as I have read that people are very friendly. Living in San Anselmo. Ca for 20 years has made me into a small town girl. Very slow going, no one in a rush, walking everywhere (library, post office, grocery store etc.)and enjoying… Continue

My Blog ..... A beginning ~ Entry #1

This is my first ever blog. In an attempt to communicate my interest in all things Plein air, I invite all to read this blog with a grain of salt. Just a dash. Speaking of dash, I ventured out today only to retreat in a mad dash to warmth. Gah... It was freezing, I can't paint in this weather. Hopefully when in Ireland this year the temp will be over 50 degrees (f).
Any ideas about what type of weather I will encounter in July and August... and September?

Using an iPad in Plein Air by David Rankin

I was asked by the website originator and administrator, Don Maier, to prepare a newsletter article on how I use an iPad as a Plein Air Imaging device.

PLEIN AIR iPAD - David Rankin's article "New Tricks for Old Dogs"

Details how artists can now use the Apple iPad with the cool new app… "Paper by 53" to greatly expand their creative imaging skills right out into Nature. …

Pastel Portraits

Today we had our annual "Taste of Acworth" and Gallery 4463 had it's own booth where I set up to do portraits. Here are a few that I did. It was good to do this today since next Saturday I am scheduled to do the same thing at the "Flavors of Fall Festival" at the Smith Gilbert Gardens on October 20th. This helps build my confidence. I have never been someone who could do the "complimentry" portrait, overlooking the flaws and lines in the face, making the subject look younger and overall…

Celebration

Celebration.... of the change of season, of health, of  steadfast friendships. friendships newly formed, and friendships renewed, and of learning to visualize this magnificent world with new insights.  I just celebrated a birthday, another year has past, and I feel I have lived it to it's fullest potential.  I gave myself a birthday gift of two days off from a grinding 9-5 job to spend it painting with a friend.

The first day I did two fantastic paintings (well for me they were…
