The painting of the boat is the one that got into the Ohio State Fair this year. The fair is in Columbus, Ohio and the painting is hanging in the Cox building from the last of July=August 9th.
I hope all of everyones wishes comes true and have a great summer.

50 Paintings in 50 Days



I'm happy to be participating in an upcoming exhibit at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA. The exhibit will feature 50 6"x 6" paintings in 50 days. 64 artists from the San Francisco Bay are participating in this juried show.

I'm into week 5 of this daily painting experience. I've been experimenting...The 1st paintings are in a series of 2. I feel free to explore various subtle compositional changes, palettes, etc.

Adventures in Laguna Beach

Laguna is French for Great Art Town! Believe it or not.

Okay, I am joking. I have no idea what Laguna actually means. But it is known throughout Southern California as a mecca for plein air artists.

My first attempt to paint Erics boats propeller with rudder



We had a great laugh btw. because in Dutch a prop for a ship

just calls screw, ... so Titling this painting "Screw Eric"

was a bit too obvious.



Anyway it didn't turned out so well, the water wasn't so clear

as I expected and there was some wind on top of that. The first

time I saw this you could look clearly under the boat and even see

the other end of the rudder and the propeller as well… Continue

Barn Smashed

Today we had quite a blow up with a thunderstorm of such strength as I have never seen before. I was told we had a "micro-burst". Several tree limbs came down on our roof and my chimney got damaged. One big one fell across my driveway but missed my truck. Several big ones came down in the backyard and damaged some rhododendrons and blueberry bushes. But worst of all by far, was a large oak tree was blown over crashing down on the barn of my neighbor James. This is the building on the right of… Continue

Plein Air Sketching

I truly enjoy sketching outdoors. Actually I think I like it better than painting. I think that is because I find it more relaxing. The work is personal, for my own nourishment and growth as an artist. I don't expect a finished product and people rarely hang over your shoulder to see your work , unlike when you set up an easel, which always draws a crowd.

Toned grounds

Here I tried a couple of toned grounds. I have a couple other colors ready to try (sienna and cad red) and just need the time to do them. Yellow ochre ground showing through on the unfinished bush to the right:

Glacier Park Paintout

Just got back from a great painting trip with 21 artist friends in Glacier Park. Had two days of blizzards, sleet,rain and wind and 6 inches of snow, but it turned nice for about 6 days and it was really spectacular! Nights we ate, drank and played poker... saw a lot of wildlife and I will post pictures and more later. Ned

Cows in California?

Bermuda Afternoon: A painting and a conversation in Progress

Four days in lovely Bermuda...One day I took the ferry from Dockyards (near our 9 Beaches cabana) to the other end of the island where I spent the day in St. George, the old, pastel painted village.

Last Chance - Palm Springs

Plein Air Painting on Catalina Island

This Sept 19,20th on Catalina Island is the 51st Annual Art Association Festival. Last year I was one of the judges for the oil painting category, this year I will be teaching a workshop. INdiana paints plein air

Hi, from Indiana. Not too many artists across the country are aware of the huge plein air movement that's going on in Indiana. Founded in 1998, the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association (IPAPA) now has almost 300 members, most of whom are from Indiana, but we also have members from Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, MIchigan and Missouri. Impromptu paint our for one

Got home from teaching this afternoon and it was wonderfully sunny and hot so I decided to paint out in my backyard rather than finishing a painting inside the studio. Only gave myself two hours and had a great time!
