My Paint Campobello plein air workshops are starting to fill!  Similar to Paint Sedona, Paint Campobello workshops are four half-days with time left to explore or paint, and it's been very popular with painters who bring along family or friends.  Campobello Island (in the Canadian Maritimes, New…

Choosing a Painting Workshop

For the original post see:  http://mchesleyjohnson.blogspot.com/2013/04/choosing-painting-workshop.html

As I write this, I'm at the Art Barn School of Art in Valparaiso, Indiana.  Spring has finally come to this part of the world – the woods are filled with a lacy fluttering of green, spring beauties carpet the ground,…

Creating a Sense of Light on a Lackluster Day

Someone recently asked how one can create a sense of light when the day lacks brilliance.  When the sun has gone behind the clouds or the fog has rolled in, contrast lessens and edges soften.  You'll find that this more diffuse light will creep into shadows, weakening them. Things can began to look downright gloomy.  When this…

Three Fall Plein Air Workshops

Even though summer has just barely hit its stride, I'm already thinking about the fall.  This fall, as I make my cross-country trip from Campobello Island, New Brunswick, to Sedona, Arizona, I'll teach three plein air painting workshops along the way.  I thought I'd mention them, as we are taking sign-ups even now.  They are:

October 1, Saturday:  Vermont, Middlebury.  A one-day oil-only workshop in historic Middlebury, home to Middlebury College.  I lived in or around… Continue

Amazing Experience in Alaska...!

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Alaska, and I had the most wonderful students to work with.  Alaskan artists are geared, wired to embrace their weather.  Rain, chill, mist, whatever the forecast...a bit of a shrug of the shoulders and a smile of assurance,…

Heading West...to Sedona, Arizona

Gosh, it's been a long time since I checked in with Plein Air Artists! Sorry to be gone so long. But now I'm packing up and ready to head to Sedona, Arizona, for the winter. I'll be teaching my Paint Sedona (www.paintsedona.com) mentoring workshops there starting in mid-December. If you're not familiar with them, these are half-day, plein air workshops. I call them "mentoring" workshops because they're designed to help steer you in your… Continue

Plein Air Painting on Catalina Island

This Sept 19,20th on Catalina Island is the 51st Annual Art Association Festival. Last year I was one of the judges for the oil painting category, this year I will be teaching a workshop. If you have never been to this lovely island off the coast of LA please think about coming out. It is always casual day, it feels like time stopped. It is quiet, no need for a car, and the marina is beautiful. I plan to have at least 4 sessions and students can sign up for one or all of them. This workshop is… Continue
