PLEIN AIR ARTISTS

An Online Artist's Coop for Artists who Paint on Location

Larry Seiler's Blog (11)

Thought I'd Give Digital Plein Air Painting a little go...

Not looking to replace my oils, gouache, acrylics...but, fun is fun...and I'm always intrigued by something new, different.  When at first difficult, I am even more intrigued and suddenly obsessed.

Last night got out for an hour and painted this one...sitting in my truck, using an ipad 2...started with a stylus, but soon…

Amazing Experience in Alaska...!

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Alaska, and I had the most wonderful students to work with.  Alaskan artists are geared, wired to embrace their weather.  Rain, chill, mist, whatever the forecast...a bit of a shrug of the shoulders and a smile of assurance,…

Making Floating L-Frames...with my Bessey Strap Clamp

Just got my Bessey Strap Clamp yesterday, finally...and really love this thing.  I had some red oak and some high grade poplar already cut and waiting.  Took me less than an hour to make two frames...

I ordered mine off Amazon.com for about $35...and here's what it looks like, holding a 9"x 12" red oak glued up drying...

Painting in the Brrrr Winter C C cccold!

The sun came out...finally...here in Wisconsin's north woods, the Nicolet National Forest, and that meant everything goes on hold...must paint. It was a cold December day...at three degrees...so, I decided it might be good to take a few extra pics and demonstrate how I...or (we) in the wintry world gear up to take on the elements, the cold specifically.

I wore three thermal shirts...layers are important, and over that a very warm outdoor's coat...also waterproof...and I come prepared… Continue

Do...Whatcha Gotta Do! Don't Whoosss Out!

Perhaps its living in the northwoods of Wisconsin, growing up and attaining Eagle Scout award at a young age, a father that was a sportsfishing guide, and many high school chums I would waterfowl hunt with...but, the rigors of time outdoors engaging recreational activities such as hunting and fishing has always simply been accepted as a common way of living and enjoying life… Continue

Forgetting Stuff Good Way to Experiment!

...a closeup of the painting-

I'm sure many have done this. A couple years ago, I drove 120 miles during the winter to get to a site I've enjoyed painting a number of times now...five above zero, only to discover I get there and forgot to transfer my white pigment to my half-box easel. I was pretty ticked at myself, but the idea of going home driving that long with my tail between my legs… Continue
