Plein air painting has its challenges but the benefits far out way them. Kevin Macpherson, an American Plein air painter, has a wonderful approach to the practice of outdoor painting.  Maybe check out his book "Fill your Oil Paintings with Light & Color", if you haven't already.

I think we were out painting that day for about four hours. I was wearing my winter gear so didn't feel the cold at all .  When the sun went down it started to get chilly.
